Comparing Traditional vs. Insurtech Auto Insurance

I've been comparing auto insurance options lately and noticed how different the newer insurtech companies are from traditional providers. Apps like Root, Metromile, and Lemonade Car use AI and driving data to calculate rates, while the big names like State Farm or GEICO still rely more on credit scores, demographics, and claim history.

On paper, insurtechs seem promising - lower premiums for safe drivers, quicker claims, and everything managed through an app. But I've also read mixed reviews about customer support, claim approvals, and price hikes after the intro period ends.

Has anyone here made the switch from a traditional insurer to an insurtech (or the other way around)?
Was it actually cheaper long-term?
How smooth was the claims process?
Did the AI-driven pricing feel fair?

Would love to hear some firsthand experiences before deciding which direction to go.

I actually switched from a traditional insurer to Root last year, and the difference was noticeable. The app setup and claims process are super convenient, and Idid end up paying a bit less at first since I drive safely. That said, I've seen my rates creepup a bit after the first year, and the AI pricing can feel a little unpredictable - sometimes it's great, sometimes it doesn't seem to reflect reality perfectly. Claims were pretty smooth for me, but I've heard friends with more complex claims have had slower responses. Overall, it's definitely worth considering if you want convenience and potentially lower rates, but it's not a guaranteed long-term cheaper option.

I switched from a traditional insurer to Metromile a while back, and it was definitely a different experience. The setup was super easy, and I liked how the rate was based on how much I actually drove - it felt fair since I work from home most days. The claims process was quick and mostly handled htrough the app, which was nice, but customer support wasn't always the fastest when I needed a real person. Overall, it was cheaper at first, but after a year my rates crept up a bit. I'd say it's great if you're a low-mileage driver and like the convenience of managing everything digitally, but it's still worth comparing with traditional insurers every so often.

I actually switched from GEICO to Root last year, and the experience was kind of eye-opening. The app makes everything super convenient, you can manage your policy and even see your driving score, but I did notice my rate went up a bit after the first year, which was a bummer. Claims were pretty smooth, though, and I liked that safe driving really did seem to lower my premium. I still keep an eye on traditional insurers like State Farm just in case, but for me, the AI-driven pricing felt fair as long as you drive carefully and read the fine print.

insurtech can be cheaper and easier day-to-day, but not necessarily perfect on support or long-term rate stability. Worth trying it and comparing a few quotes before you decide.
