For those of you running small businesses, when did you decide to move from spreadsheets to actual payroll software? i've only got 5 employees, and part of me feels like excel is still fine, but it's starting to get messy. curious if switching saves enough time to be worth the monthly cost.

I stuck with Excel until about 6 people, then it just got too messy and I kept worrying about mistakes. Moving to payroll software saved me time and stress, especially with taxes. With 5 people you might still be fine though-do you feel it's more the hassle or just wanting peace of mind?

I stuck with spreadsheets until about 6-7 employees, then it just got too messy and stressful. Switching to payroll software felt pricey at first, but it saved me a ton of time and mistakes. If Excel's already giving you headaches with 5, it might be worth trying. Do you handle the tax stuff yourself right now?

For a small team, payroll software can seem unnecessary at first, but it really comes down to how much hassle payroll creates for you. If you've only got a couple of employees and things are simple, manual tracking usually works. But once you start juggling taxes, deductions, or different pay schedules, software really helps cut down on mistakes and svaes time. Do you find the harder part is getting the calculations right, or just how much time payroll takes up each month?

I've been there. Managing payroll ins preadsheets gets messy once you hit 5-6 employees with multiple pay rates, taxes, and benefits. Switching to software like Gusto or QuickBooks Payroll saved time, reduced errors, and made tax season easier. I'd recommend considering it early. How have others handled this transition?

I was in the same spot with a small team, and honestly, the switch to payroll software was a game-changer even with just five employees. Spreadsheets work at first, but once you start juggling taxes, benefits, overtime, and tracking time off, it gets messy fast and mistakes can get expensive. Payroll software automates calculations, tax filings, and payments, which saves a surprising amount of time and stress each month. For me, the cost was more than offset by the hours I wasn't spending double-checking numbers and correcting errors. Have you looked at any specific platforms, or are you still weighing the options?

running payroll for a handful of people on Excel felt manageable at first, but once taxes, deductions, and time-off tracking started piling up, it got chaotic fast. I switched to Gusto last year, and honestly, it was such atime-saver. Everything's automated; payslips, tax forms, reminders, and I don't have to double-check formulas anymore. If you're spending more than an hour or two each pay period fixing spreadsheets, the software basically pays for itself.

Most folks make the switch once payroll starts feeling like a headache-missed taxes, overtime confusion, or extra tracking. With ~5 people, payroll software usually does save time and stress even if it costs a bit. Spreadsheets can work, but once it gets messy, a tool just makes life easier.
