Where can I find a good free budget template for Excel?

I'm trying to get more organized with my money and figured I'd start with Excel since I already use it for work. I looked online and found a bunch of templates, but most of them feel either too fancy or way too basic. Has anyone found a free one that's actually practical and easy to stick with? Or do you just end up making your own from scratch?

I went down the same rabbit hole when I first tried budgeting in Excel. Some templates looked amazing but I’d give up after a week because they were too complicated, and the super simple ones didn’t give me enough info. In the end I tweaked a basic template and added just the categories I actually needed, like rent, food, and savings goals. It wasn’t perfect, but it was something I could actually keep up with month after month.

Have you tried starting with a simple layout and then slowly adding things as you go? That way it grows with you instead of feeling overwhelming right away.

Honestly, I've been in the same situation while looking for a budget template. Most of the free ones online were either too complicated or didn't really match what I needed. What helped me was starting with a very simple template and then adding my own categories like groceries, rent, and small savings goals. That way it stayed easy but still useful. Have you tried customizing one of the basic free templates instead of searching for the "perfect" one?

I tried a bunch too and most felt over the top or too plain. I just made a simple one with income, bills, and savings-it's easy to keep up with. Honestly, the best sheet is the one you'll actually update. Do you want it more for daily spending or long-term savings?

i totally agree with both of you about the problem with templates-they are either built for a massive business or so basic they only have two columns! i ended up doing exactly what you described and building my own from a blank sheet, but i used a simple youtube tutorial to set up the basic formulas, like an automated "remaining budget" total. having that automated really omtivates me to track everything. what's one essential calculation or feature you added to your custom spreadsheet that you couldn't live without now?

I've tried a few templates myself, and most either have way too many bells and whistles or are so barebones that you barely track anything. For me, I ended up tweaking a simple monthly tracker I found online, just adding the categories I actually use .It's not fancy, but it's easy to stick with, and updating it doesn't feel like a chore.

I'd start with a simple monthly budget template that just tracks income, expenses, and totals. Those tend to be the easiest to stick with, and most have formulas that automatically calculate everything for you.
